South African reggae artist Maveriq Mavo has expressed interest in collaborating with Malawian artists during his appearance at the UMP Festival.
He revealed his enthusiasm for working with local talents while in the country, particularly as he will be backed by the renowned Tuff Lions Band.
“Being backed by Tuff Lions, there’s a high chance of creating a song or two. Who knows? We might even develop a UMP Festival 2024 Riddim, where all interested artists can add a lyric, verse, or chorus. Collaborations foster long-term relationships and bring unity among us,” Mavo said.
Malawian Reggae Dancehall artists expected to share stage with Mavo include; The Black Missionaries Band, Anthony Makondetsa, Bon Afrikan, Trumel, Nepman, Tuff Lions Band, Sean Morgan and others.
Mavo also emphasized the universal nature of reggae, while celebrating the unique cultural sounds each country brings to the genre.
“Reggae across the world is one, but what makes it special is the inclusion of our cultural sounds and traditions. Many of my songs are in my mother tongue, IsiXhosa, and I love that some Malawian artists also sing in theirs. When paired with African sounds, it’s clear that Africa is deeply connected to reggae—the people’s voice. Each country may have its variations, but reggae is still reggae,” he added.
